It Is Finished

John 19:30—”When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

It is finished—Christ satisfied God’s justice by dying for all to pay for the sins of the world.  These sins can never be punished again since that would violate God’s justice.  Sins can only be punished once, either by substitute or by yourself.

John 4:34—”Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”

Jesus accomplished God’s work through His life and death on the cross.  It is difficult to fathom that His death two thousand years ago paid for our sins today and for the rest of our lives on this earth.  What did or can we do to deserve this kind of love and forgiveness?

Colossians 2:13—”And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 2:14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”

The father of sin, Satan, wants to keep a veil over our eyes that we might not see the finished work of the cross and that God disarmed Satan’s power over our lives.

Hebrews 9:26—”for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.  Hebrews 9:28–so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

We eagerly wait for His return because He has already dealt with our sin once and for all.

Hebrews 10:8—”When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), Hebrews 10:10–And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

He is calling us to a life of faith and trust in His finished work.

Hebrews 2:14—”Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 2:15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

We have been delivered from a life of slavery to sin because He paid a debt He did not owe, our debt.  Lord, may You open our eyes that we might see and trust in Your finished work, the forgiveness of all of our trespasses.
